I am always optimistic about fishing and always have been but the truth of the matter is that you never know if the fish are going to bite on a given day until you go fishing. You never know!
As was the case the last few days when I had new customers Jim and Kim Miller from Longview Texas. When I have new customers I am always anxious to show them a good time on the White River and to catch a lot of trout which is what I am know for. Well, you might know the water came way up due to new generated water from Bull Shoals lake and that really shut the fish down. By shore lunch time we had caught only 17 or 18 fish and for me that is like catching no fish. The good news was that the river had started coming back down and was beginning to clear which usually puts the fish back in a feeding mood but that is never a for sure situation.
Still with great expectations we headed back up the river to find some clearing water and started our afternoon fishing. I went only to places that I knew for sure hold trout and especially larger Brown trout. The fishing was still slow but I kept telling them to keep casting and to fish slower and deeper.....I was just hoping they would catch some fish when all of a sudden Jim says "I am hung up". I kept looking for his line out the right side of the boat but I couldn't find it. The reason was that what was supposed to be a rock was actually swimming across in front of our boat and all the way over to the right side of the river.
It was no rock...it was a fish and a large on at that! With an 1/8th ounce jig and 4 pound line you just have to wait them out. I started the motor and cut the distance in half where Jim could at least have a chance. Five minutes later the Brown came to the surface, one swipe with the net and we had him captured! 23 inches long and 6.5 pounds of spawning German Brown Trout!! We went to the bank to get some good pictures and worked with the trout until he was totally revived. The last time we saw him he was headed upstream and would be back in his lair in no time!! Everyone was now not only happy but relieved that something really good and exciting had come of an otherwise poor day of
fishing!!
That evening, back at the lodge, Jim Miller was inducted into the Lingers Guide Service Trophy Club and we visited about what a thrill it had been. As I said earlier....YOU NEVER KNOW!!! You just have to keep your line in the water and keep the lure where you know there are fish
Further good news!!! The next day we caught around 70 fish and Kim caught a 17 inch Brown, Jim caught an 18 inch Brown and the trip ended on what was a very positive note. They will be back to fish again and maybe next time it will be Kims turn to catch "WALTER"!! The spawning German Brown Trout!! FISH ON! – Linger
